Incompressible stretch

A rubber block pulled in one direction must contract in the other two if volume is preserved: λ1 λ2 λ3 = 1. The stored energy of a Mooney–Rivlin or neo-Hookean solid is a function of those stretches, not of a small-strain tensor.

J = λ₁ λ₂ λ₃ = 1
