A hinged–hinged strut has a critical load Pcr = π² EI / L². Below that load a small crookedness is amplified by 1 / (1 − P/Pcr). The linear eigenvalue is the load at which the trivial straight solution loses uniqueness; it is not a capacity once the rotation is finite.
